By now, you've heard that single-use plastic use is effecting our oceans and wrecking havoc on many natural habitats. Unless, of course, you’ve been living under a bar stool for the last decade, in which case we, are honored to be the first to tell you that plastic pollution is a huge problem.
Plastic bottles take 450 years to break down and in some cases, it can take up to 1000 years for plastic to decompose in a landfill. While scientists are looking for a solution (hello, plastic-eating mushrooms!), you can do your part to help minimize your plastic use by keeping these two essentials by your side at all times.
At first, paper straws seemed a promising swap for plastic, but sadly the nature of the materials don't last long when submerged in liquid, and people quickly switched back to plastic. Luckily, silicone and metal straws have swooped in to save the day. The sleek metal straws are must-have item for any bar cart, but also are ideal to keep in your car, in your tote bag, or at your desk. Silicone straws are lightweight, easy to clean, and because of the bendable nature, they can also be folded down and tucked away in a small case that can be added to your keyring.
You can use a to-go tumbler during your morning commute to carry your English breakfast (with a splash of honey) or black coffee (with a splash of sugar). In the afternoon, when you've decided to swap out your caffeine fix for water, and in the evening, you can drink your favorite red wine out of this adult sippy cup. To-go tumblers keep plastic lids, water bottles, and paper cups out of our landfills. Plus, many local coffee shops offers discounts when you bring your own cup and although chains like Starbucks only offer a $0.10 discount, this eco-friendly practice is much greener than throwing away a cup every single day.
